What is a UV t-shirt?

A UV T-shirt is a technical garment specially designed to offer maximum sun protection. Unlike a conventional T-shirt, which does not provide controlled filtration of ultraviolet rays, the fabric of a UV T-shirt is certified UPF 50+ in accordance with European standard EN 13758-1, guaranteeing a very high level of protection against harmful solar rays. This effectiveness is based on a meticulous choice of fibres, optimum weave density and a design that mechanically blocks UV rays, without resorting to the application of chemical filters.

At Ker Sun, our exacting standards for UV protection on our t-shirts are reflected in the rigorous tests carried out on each fabric and each colour, ensuring consistent protection, season after season. While a conventional T-shirt may let some UV rays through, our UV T-shirts offer a real and measurable barrier, actively helping to prevent the harmful effects of prolonged exposure to the sun, such as sunburn, premature skin ageing or the aggravation of certain skin conditions.

In short, a UV T-shirt differs from ordinary T-shirts in that it is expertly designed to effectively block the sun's harmful rays, mainly UVA and UVB, and guarantees maximum sun protection thanks to rigorous certification of the garment to standards.

Is a lycra a UV protective t-shirt?

The confusion arises from the fact that the term « Lycra » primarily refers to a stretchy synthetic fiber (elastane), but is often mistakenly used to refer to a swim shirt as a whole. For example, when we talk about « Lycra » when thinking of a swim shirt, we are not referring to the actual function or properties of the garment, but simply to one of its textile components. This imprecision sometimes leads to a simple swim shirt containing Lycra being mistakenly compared to a shirt specially designed for UV protection.

A lycra is therefore not, by definition, a UV t-shirt. Although these garments, popular for their strength, elasticity and comfort during aquatic activities, can partially block the passage of ultraviolet rays through the fabric, they are not systematically designed or tested to guarantee optimal UV filtration.

Conversely, a UV t-shirt (bathing or not) is developed with a specific objective: to effectively block UVA and UVB rays. Its effectiveness is measured, controlled and certified according to strict standards (for example European standards EN 13758-1 and EN 13758-2), giving it a proven UPF 50+ protection level.

In short, it's important not to assume that a swimsuit T-shirt (or more commonly known as a « Lycra ») systematically offers UV protection. Only a certified UV T-shirt will provide you with a reliable barrier that meets the expectations of even the most sensitive skin.
